Frequently Asked Questions
What types of penalties can the IRS impose for not filing an extension?
If you do not file a return or an extension by the deadline, the IRS can impose a failure-to-file penalty, which is generally more costly than a failure-to-pay penalty. Filing an extension helps you avoid this penalty even if you need more time to pay what you owe.
How much in penalties can the IRS impose on a taxpayer?
The failure-to-file penalty is typically 5% of the unpaid taxes for each month a return is late, up to a maximum of 25%. A separate failure-to-pay penalty of 0.5% per month can also apply. Interest accrues on top of these penalties, so costs can add up quickly the longer a return goes unfiled.
What is the filing deadline for my business, and how much time is allowed to file?
Deadlines vary by entity type. Partnerships and S-corporations typically file by mid-March, while C-corporations and sole proprietors typically follow the mid-April deadline. An approved extension generally gives your business an additional five to six months to file. We can confirm the exact dates and deadlines that apply to your entity type.
Do I need to file both a business extension and a personal extension?
It depends on your business structure. If your business income passes through to your personal return, such as with a sole proprietorship, partnership, or S-corporation, you may need to file both a business extension and a personal extension to protect yourself on both fronts. We can review your situation and file whichever extensions you need.
